“Before and After: A Different View”

A dated ’70s home – built in the grounds of a former Edwardian manor – gains a new storey and a contemporary makeover

“It was a one-off house which had the wow factor in its day”, reflects Carol Smith, who together with husband Bill took a hands-on role in transforming this 1974 property in Warwickshire into a family home for the 21st century.  Whilst the dated split-level bungalow resembled a “log cabin” – clad inside and out with dark-stained timber – the couple could see the potential: “We had no regrets leaving our former house, which we’d spent 11 years doing up” says Carol.  “We were head over heels, especially with the garden”.

A redundant apple-pressing barn is given new purpose – stripped back and rebuilt, it has become a stunning home.

“It was derelict, difficult to access and the doors we hanging off”, says Andy Miles of the barn he and wife Joanna would go on to conert into a home.  The Grade II listed barn, built in 1780, was originally used for apple pressing, but after falling into disuse, it fulfilled the humble purpose of storing farm machinery.

“Design Company Celebrates Decade Year”

A M Architectural Design Ltd is ten years old this year. With a decade of experience and over 600 projects, accompanied by vast technical knowledge and good relationships with Local Authorities, there is no better practice to undertake your project.

Warwickshire Living Editorial - Sep 09

Managing Director of A M Architectural Design Ltd, Andy Miles is passionate about good design.

The Alcester based firm is an architectural practice with a difference, providing a walk-in advice centre giving free initial advice along side the company’s core product of a professional, first class architectural service which offers creative and imaginative, yet cost effective design solutions.

Andy, who worked in the Development Department at Birmingham International Airport before setting up the practice in December 1999, says “When the company was set up, I wanted to change the stereotypical perception associated with architectural professionals being formal and uncommunicative and open our doors to the public to make the whole process more transparent. The concept of the company is to offer a professional, customer friendly service at street level.”

A M Design undertakes projects of all sizes, varying from small domestic extensions right through to large property makeovers and one off bespoke new build properties, one of which being an eco-friendly, zero carbon replacement dwelling that has recently been approved at planning stage.

“We are proud that many of our clients recommend us to their friends and family. In the past, one our kitchen designs has been featured on the front cover of a national magazine. Several other projects have previously been short listed for Local Authority Design Awards and several more are about to be entered into the Daily Telegraph Homebuilding and Renovating Awards 2009.”

The first thing Andy will do when a new enquiry is made is to arrange to meet with the client with photographs or plans of the property in question. Alternatively the meeting can be held on site. The initial step of the process is to chat through the client’s brief and design requirements. Following this, fees are quoted and once agreed the project can begin.

Along with Andy, the team consists of Technicians Sean, Stuart and Ruth who are assisted by Business and Marketing Administrator, Danielle.

“At A M Design, we strive to not only meet, but exceed our clients design expectations”
